As we enter our drier season, the Mid-Coast Water Conservation Consortium (Mid-Coast Water) is encouraging our community members to be mindful of our water use habits. Mid-Coast Water is a group of water providers on the Mid-Coast working together to promote water conservation. Members include: the Cities of Lincoln City, Newport, Toledo, Waldport, Yachats, and Siletz, as well as Seal Rock Water District and other smaller water providers. When you conserve water, you are part of a local effort to help our communities and fish and wildlife.

There are many ways to cut down on water use to help conserve our water resources. Here are some suggestions:

  • Use an efficient irrigation method. Consider hand-watering at the base of your plants or using soaker hoses or drip irrigation to deliver water directly to the roots. If using sprinklers, low-pressure systems or WaterSense-labeled controllers can have significant water savings.
  • Let the lawn dry in between waterings. Lawn irrigation uses a lot of water, and it’s not generally needed more than once or twice a week.
  • Landscape with native, drought-tolerant plants. The benefits of native plant landscapes don’t end with conserving water—native plants also attract pollinators and wildlife to support biodiversity!
  • Check for and fix leaks. Toilets commonly leak because of worn flappers, which are inexpensive to replace. Broken sprinkler heads are another place to check for leaks. Any unexplained increase in water usage on your water bill can be a sign of a leak as well.
  • Install water-efficient fixtures, such as faucet aerators and showerheads. Faucet aerators that use less than 1 gallon per minute and showerheads that use 1.75 gallons per minute of water or less can save your household over
